Traditional Finnish baking

Today I had an event for one of my courses: get Finternational. We went to the VocationalInstitutee of Turku to bake some traditional Finnish food and it was really interesting! We cooked three different things: rye loaf, karelian pasties, Finnish cinnamon rolls. We were in groups and cooked all of them. I started with Karelian pasties (and also I would say that they were my favourites) and it has a technique for doing the size but we tried several times and I can say that I know how to do it (it doesn´t mean that I do it well). Then we put them in the oven and after that, you have to brush them with butter and wait and it´s done! It was new for me the fact that we eat them with scrambled eggs on top, and it´s so much good with it. We also mash the dough of the bread (rye load), it was very difficult to get the good size; but this was the one I didn´t like so much, because I usually don’t eat this type of bread, it´s such different of the one from my country. After that, we made the Finnish cinnamon rolls, and they are also very good, they needed more time to be ready but I was worthy because they are delicious! I found this event very interesting and tasty! After cooking everything we could taste everything and bring some of them to our home and to share with other exchange students friends; and also we asked for the recipe so now we can make them!

Alcohol

I have to dedicate one post to the alcohol because it´s really expensive here! First of all, you can´t buy "hard" alcohol at the supermarket, as you can in Spain. Here, at the supermarket, you only can buy some beers or cider (maximum 5% of alcohol) but nothing else. So, if you want to buy wine, vodka, gin, or beers with more % of alcohol you have to go to a specific shop, called Alko, they are near supermarkets normally, and for example, in Turku city centre there are two. But, remember this: if you want to buy alcohol you have to show your ID card, but also the people who go with you have to show it (one time I went with a friend but it was me the one who was buying and I couldn´t because she didn´t have it). They say that they do it to have control of the alcohol, but they don´t count the consuming of each person or something, it´s just a different shop because it´s from the Government so it earns money with that. Furthermore, they have another restriction, if you are 18...

The end of the Erasmus

I have more days here in Turku, but a lot of people started leaving and it´s sad because you realize that the end is coming, and we have to don´t waste our last month (less than one month..) here, I have a lot of things that I want to do before leaving so I´m doing a list with one friend to don´t miss anything. In one hand I want to go home because I miss my family, friends, the good weather (the sun mostly), and the food of course, also the lifestyle, but...on the other hand I don´t want to leave at all!! Here I can live my life, I met new people, I´ve learnt about other cultures, other meals, other customs, and I am happy here, I know I will miss a lot of things when I go home. I will miss the friends I made here, of course, I will miss Unica restaurants (at home I have to cook every day), I will miss the landscapes and the peace you can feel here, I will miss the safety, I will miss my room and the city, and being discovering and travelling.. I have one more trip before leaving, I´m...

Finnish prom

I had one course that is called Get Finternational, the point of that course is that we have to make different events related to Finnish culture, so it´s quite interesting. One of the events that I chose was to go a prom. We went to Naantali to see a Finnish prom and that was really funny. First of all, we got to Naantali and some students from the school were waiting for us to show us the school and the small city. The school was amazing, there was a TV in the hall and a pair of billiards to play, I was impressed with that, it´s really different in my country. Then, we went to the lake, obviously, it was frozen and we also saw the Moomin world, but it was closed. In the lake they were making a fire to cook some sausages and marshmallow, they were so good. After eating the sausages and enjoy the nature we went to see quickly the centre of the city and came back to school. At the school, the other two students explain to us how the education works here, in Finland and a bit about th...
