Seminars

I found quite interesting that at the university there are seminars quite often of different topics and they are interactive and interesting. Also, if you go to two or them and write a report you can use it for some course. This morning I went to one of the seminars, it was very interesting to me because it was about how people react psychologically after a terrorist attack. I was thinking about being a specialist in this kind of situations, like catastrophes in general, so I wanted to go today. I think it was very interesting and it wasn´t boring at all.
I believe that this kind of activities are really useful when you are studying something you like because the seminars are usually about some topics related with the career but which you don´t study at class, so it´s like an "extra" for the students. Today at the university there were a lot of them at different times and about different topics.
At my home university, we have seminars about interesting topics also, but we can have class at the same time so we have to organize some times if we want to go; although they don´t plan a whole morning with different seminars as here today.

Sitz

Today I want to talk about sitzs. A sitz is a kind of party, typical in Finland, or in Turku (I´m not sure), it starts around 6 p.m and finishes around 10 p.m. What is it about? Well, you have some food, you have drinks (beer, cider, and three disgusting shots) and a notebook with some songs. When you get there you have to look for your name on the table because they organize people at the table, so you are going to meet new people, and this is really cool. So, you can talk to the people you are sat and follow the rules of the Toastmasters. So, in summary all together have to sing the songs they say, also you can choose a song and sing it standing up. During the songs, if a specific word is said you have to drink and "cheers" with the people around you. There are different rules and I´m not going to say all of them but for example, if you want to go to the toilet you have to ask permission to the people next to you. I believe that it´s really weird but so funny. There are som...

Riga

When I posted about Tallinn I didn´t say anything about Riga, so as it was part of the trip I would like to talk about it for a bit. We only spent one day there so maybe it´s better to have a couple of days to visit it better, but it wasn´t my favourite place to visit. I like it but it wasn´t special for me, although I have to say that it was very cold and we were a lot of hours in the street and also a woman tried to rob me, so maybe I can not be totally objective with my opinion. The free tour we made was interesting because it was a bit different, we went to places which are not popular and touristic, and I really like doing this kind of things when I travel. Riga is not a really big city but if you want to visit different places and not just the touristic area I think you will need more than one day. There are a lot of buildings which are worthy to see, at least from outside, different churches and other kind of buildings. For me, people were really different from Finland and a...

Porvoo

My family came to visit me last week, so I went to Helsinki to pick them and we decided to visit Porvoo because it´s near Helsinki. Porvoo is a very small town for almost one hour by bus from Helsinki. We took an Onnibus bus in the morning and we spend a couple of hours there. It has these typical red wooden house next to the river and a small old town, but it´s nice to walk through the streets. There is a church with a tower and a lot of wooden houses all around. There is a ski slope in the city also!! My parents were surprised by that. There is not that much to do there but it´s a good place to walk and see the local shops about souvenirs, clothes, chocolate, etc. We had a break in a very good bakery, we took hot chocolate and some typical pastry, it was homemade that morning and it was delicious! Also, the place was really cozy and the woman was kind talking with me, and she asked me if I knew Finnish and I had to speak the basic things I know with her but she was surprised. Fin...
