Vappu II

Today I want to talk about the Vappu day because now I lived the experience. It was a wonderful day, everyone was in the streets and Turku was very crowded. The 30th of May is celebrated this 'party', but it´s also funny because is not just university people, but also families and old people. They were wearing a white cap, they get this cup when they graduated at university, and since year every year they wear it on this day and the 1st of May, and they feel very proud wearing it. It was very impressive seeing the old people with their old caps.
In the morning there´s free punch at university (University of Turku mostly) and there are different stands from different organizations or degrees offering this punch (I have to say that one of them were really good, but others...), you only have to take your own cup and then you can take punch as much as you want. It´s a very good way to start the day. Also, there was a band playing some music and free balloons and some staff. After that, I went to Assarin Ullako because there was a special brunch and I ate a lot because the day was going to be long! Then, people rest or go to the river to keep drinking and chilling with friends, I decided to do the second one so we kept drinking in the afternoon. Then, at 6 in one hill there is a speech and the people take off the white cap and the party starts. I was very very surprised there because I´ve never seen so many people in the whole of Finland as that day! And after it, they keep drinking by the river, so we did it to be a real Finnish!
At night there are some parties but the prices are really high (more than usual), but definitely, if you come to Finland, you have to experience Vappu day!
The first of May you can feel the hangover but there is a picnic in the park of the observatory (in another hill) and everyone goes there with families, and of course with their white caps! Sadly we were there eating but it started to rain and the day was a bit ugly.

Alcohol

I have to dedicate one post to the alcohol because it´s really expensive here! First of all, you can´t buy "hard" alcohol at the supermarket, as you can in Spain. Here, at the supermarket, you only can buy some beers or cider (maximum 5% of alcohol) but nothing else. So, if you want to buy wine, vodka, gin, or beers with more % of alcohol you have to go to a specific shop, called Alko, they are near supermarkets normally, and for example, in Turku city centre there are two. But, remember this: if you want to buy alcohol you have to show your ID card, but also the people who go with you have to show it (one time I went with a friend but it was me the one who was buying and I couldn´t because she didn´t have it). They say that they do it to have control of the alcohol, but they don´t count the consuming of each person or something, it´s just a different shop because it´s from the Government so it earns money with that. Furthermore, they have another restriction, if you are 18...

The end of the Erasmus

I have more days here in Turku, but a lot of people started leaving and it´s sad because you realize that the end is coming, and we have to don´t waste our last month (less than one month..) here, I have a lot of things that I want to do before leaving so I´m doing a list with one friend to don´t miss anything. In one hand I want to go home because I miss my family, friends, the good weather (the sun mostly), and the food of course, also the lifestyle, but...on the other hand I don´t want to leave at all!! Here I can live my life, I met new people, I´ve learnt about other cultures, other meals, other customs, and I am happy here, I know I will miss a lot of things when I go home. I will miss the friends I made here, of course, I will miss Unica restaurants (at home I have to cook every day), I will miss the landscapes and the peace you can feel here, I will miss the safety, I will miss my room and the city, and being discovering and travelling.. I have one more trip before leaving, I´m...

Finnish prom

I had one course that is called Get Finternational, the point of that course is that we have to make different events related to Finnish culture, so it´s quite interesting. One of the events that I chose was to go a prom. We went to Naantali to see a Finnish prom and that was really funny. First of all, we got to Naantali and some students from the school were waiting for us to show us the school and the small city. The school was amazing, there was a TV in the hall and a pair of billiards to play, I was impressed with that, it´s really different in my country. Then, we went to the lake, obviously, it was frozen and we also saw the Moomin world, but it was closed. In the lake they were making a fire to cook some sausages and marshmallow, they were so good. After eating the sausages and enjoy the nature we went to see quickly the centre of the city and came back to school. At the school, the other two students explain to us how the education works here, in Finland and a bit about th...
