Riga

When I posted about Tallinn I didn´t say anything about Riga, so as it was part of the trip I would like to talk about it for a bit. We only spent one day there so maybe it´s better to have a couple of days to visit it better, but it wasn´t my favourite place to visit. I like it but it wasn´t special for me, although I have to say that it was very cold and we were a lot of hours in the street and also a woman tried to rob me, so maybe I can not be totally objective with my opinion. The free tour we made was interesting because it was a bit different, we went to places which are not popular and touristic, and I really like doing this kind of things when I travel. Riga is not a really big city but if you want to visit different places and not just the touristic area I think you will need more than one day. There are a lot of buildings which are worthy to see, at least from outside, different churches and other kind of buildings. For me, people were really different from Finland and also the style of life is different although it´s a Nordic country also. This is not about the city but the bus was the best bus I´ve ever taken in my whole life, really, it was so fancy, and we have free coffee or tea or chocolate and it was very spacious and comfortable, and also we have these screens to see movies, I was shocked by the quality of it.

Curling

I want to write about my curling experience. Yesterday evening I went to an ESN event which consisted of playing curling. I was wondering how it would be, and now I can say that it was funny. As the man who works there said, it´s easy to know how to play but it´s difficult to play it well! Curling is played in an ice "field", we went to the Turku Arena oy. The bad thing is that I was really cold because I forgot to wear more than one lyer and it was 5º, and I thought that we will be tired or warm because we were playing sport, but that is not the truth. I have to say that I wasn´t so bad, I learnt quickly how to play, although when we were playing in teams I was really bad because I trough it very strong and it went further the circles where you have to put it. I think it´s a good experience to practice once in life, but I think I will not repeat because two hours of it is maybe too much, however, I recommend it! But you have to know that today I have two bruises in my knee...

Alcohol

I have to dedicate one post to the alcohol because it´s really expensive here! First of all, you can´t buy "hard" alcohol at the supermarket, as you can in Spain. Here, at the supermarket, you only can buy some beers or cider (maximum 5% of alcohol) but nothing else. So, if you want to buy wine, vodka, gin, or beers with more % of alcohol you have to go to a specific shop, called Alko, they are near supermarkets normally, and for example, in Turku city centre there are two. But, remember this: if you want to buy alcohol you have to show your ID card, but also the people who go with you have to show it (one time I went with a friend but it was me the one who was buying and I couldn´t because she didn´t have it). They say that they do it to have control of the alcohol, but they don´t count the consuming of each person or something, it´s just a different shop because it´s from the Government so it earns money with that. Furthermore, they have another restriction, if you are 18...

Vappu II

Today I want to talk about the Vappu day because now I lived the experience. It was a wonderful day, everyone was in the streets and Turku was very crowded. The 30th of May is celebrated this 'party', but it´s also funny because is not just university people, but also families and old people. They were wearing a white cap, they get this cup when they graduated at university, and since year every year they wear it on this day and the 1st of May, and they feel very proud wearing it. It was very impressive seeing the old people with their old caps. In the morning there´s free punch at university (University of Turku mostly) and there are different stands from different organizations or degrees offering this punch (I have to say that one of them were really good, but others...), you only have to take your own cup and then you can take punch as much as you want. It´s a very good way to start the day. Also, there was a band playing some music and free balloons and some staff. After ...
